Back in 1997, Abbygale Arenas made a bold fashion statement on the Miss Universe stage by showcasing a traditional farmer’s hat, known as a “salakot.” However, her version was far from ordinary; it was adorned with a stunning curtain of delicate seashells. This unique twist seamlessly blended the essence of both maritime and farming motifs into her overall look. Complementing this striking head piece,  Abbygale donned a graceful pina blouse and a timeless checkered skirt, showcasing a harmonious fusion of tradition and elegance.

Miriam Quiambao’s costume offered a unique and deconstructed interpretation of Filipino festive wear. Adorned in bejeweled wires, her butterfly sleeves took on a sculptural form, exuding a captivating charm. Complementing this intricate top, her skirt boasted voluminous ostrich feathers, creating a sense of regal grandeur. Completing the ensemble was what appeared to be a sizable golden palaspas, reminiscent of a palm bouquet, held gracefully in her hand.

Gazini Ganados’ national costume for the 2019Miss Universe pageant was a dazzling representation of a Philippine eagle, an endangered species and a symbol of the country’s strength. The costume, designed by Cary Santiago, featured a fierce and intricately designed headdress that resembled the eagle’s wingspan. The gown’s golden and black colors evoked the majestic plumage of the eagle, exuding both grace and power.

Pia Wurtzbach,  who went on to win the Miss Universe title in 2015, wore a show-stopping national costume designed by Albert Andrada. The costume, aptly named “LuzViMinda,” was a vibrant representation of the three major island groups of the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The gown was adorned with intricate beading, and Pia’s poise and grace brought the ensemble to life, embodying the unity and diversity of the Filipino culture.
